“Blindness” is a dystopian thriller film directed by Fernando Meirelles and based on the novel of the same name by José Saramago. The film follows an unnamed city where a contagious epidemic of blindness breaks out, causing the government to quarantine those affected in an abandoned mental hospital.

As the epidemic spreads, the hospital becomes overcrowded and chaotic, and a group of patients band together to survive in the face of desperation and violence. Among them is the only person who is immune to the blindness, the Doctor’s wife (played by Julianne Moore), who acts as their guide and protector as they navigate the dangerous world outside.

Review:

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of 42% based on 166 reviews, with an average rating of 5.5/10. The critical consensus reads: “Blindness boasts a talented cast, but director Fernando Meirelles can’t quite capture the novel’s magic or convey its message in a meaningful way.”

Awards:

While the film was not a major awards contender, it did receive several nominations, including a nomination for the Palme d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Julianne Moore also received a nomination for Best Actress at the Satellite Awards.

Popularity:

The film was not a box office success, grossing only $19.2 million worldwide against a budget of $25 million. However, it has gained a cult following over the years and is often cited as a thought-provoking and visually striking film. The film’s themes of societal breakdown, morality, and human nature continue to resonate with audiences.
