“Memories of Murder” is a 2003 South Korean crime-drama film directed by Bong Joon-ho. The film is based on the true story of the serial killings that occurred in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea between 1986 and 1991.
Synopsis: The film follows two detectives, Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) and Cho Yong-koo (Kim Roi-ha), as they investigate a series of brutal murders that are occurring in a rural town in South Korea. The detectives struggle to find clues and catch the killer, and their methods become increasingly desperate and violent as the case wears on. As the murders continue, a young woman named Kwon Kwi-ok (Kim Hyeon-sook) becomes the only surviving victim and becomes the key to cracking the case.
Awards: The film won several awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Lighting at the Grand Bell Awards. It also won Best Film and Best Director at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. In addition, the film was screened at several international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 10-minute standing ovation. It was also chosen as South Korea’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004.
